What Should Someone Look for in a Rainwater Harvesting System in the US?

by | Mar 2, 2022 | Water Treatment Plant

Would your company benefit from a rainwater harvesting system? By collecting water from the building’s roof, you can save water and money. Rainwater harvesting can be a cost-effective way to reduce water consumption and can be a great source for non-potable uses of water. Does it really make sense to use drinking water to flush toilets? Instead, a rainwater harvesting system can save thousands of gallons of water when hooked up to the building’s toilet fixtures.

What Is a Rainwater Harvesting System?

The first step is to design the building to capture the rainwater. It must be diverted from the roof to a single point where the cistern will store the water until needed. The cistern should be large enough to save a good amount of water, but not so large that it is mostly empty most of the time.

A modern system has several components designed to treat water after it is collected. Proper systems will have multiple filtration steps as well as sanitation such as UV or chlorine. Proper sanitation kills bacteria, making it safe for use in public areas.
