What Factors Affect Embryo Transfer Success Rates

by | Mar 31, 2023 | Healthcare

Embryo transfer is placing embryos into the uterus after in vitro fertilization. Embryo transfers are used to achieve pregnancy in several ways. Several factors can affect the success rate regardless of which type of embryo transfer is used.

Age

Age is a factor that can affect your success rate. If you’re over 40, it may be more challenging to get pregnant and stay pregnant than if you were younger. Women under 35 have higher success rates than those over 40 because of the eggs’ age. The more eggs there are, the better chance of getting pregnant!

Embryo Quality

Embryo quality is a crucial factor in determining success rates. An embryo with poor quality may be unable to implant in the uterus or result in a pregnancy. Factors that contribute to poor embryo quality include:

  • Maternal age over 40 years old
  • Female infertility issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids
  • Poor sperm quality from the male partner

Genetics

As you may have guessed, genetics is one of the most vital factors affecting embryo transfer success. The genetic makeup of both parents can affect the likelihood of a successful pregnancy, and genes that are passed on to your child can cause miscarriage.

Genetic testing can help determine if there are any problems with your embryos’ DNA so that doctors will know what kind of care should go into selecting embryos for transfer.
