There are many reasons to consider getting your scuba certification in Maui. Maybe you loved the water and wanted to get closer to the animals beneath. Perhaps you have an interest in coral reefs and want to see them up close. Or you may be interested in checking out sunken shipwrecks and need certification to do so. In this article, we’ll look at how to get certified and what to expect.
Open Water Certification Courses
Anyone who is 15 or older can become PADI open water certified. There is also a separate course for children who are 10 or older. To get enrolled in a course, you generally must be in good health, without major issues. However, some disabilities may not disqualify you from certification. Get in contact with the company offering the course you would like to take, and find out what the requirements are.
Length of Certification Process
In most cases, getting scuba certification in Maui will not take too long. The open water course can be taken in only a few days. The theoretical section of the course can be done online at your own pace before taking the practical portion of the course. However, some dive centers may only have courses a few times a week, which may mean getting certified takes a bit longer.
Parts of the Course
The first part of the course will consist of knowledge development. This gives you the theoretical knowledge you need to be a great diver. This includes information about the gear you need, how diving affects the body, how to equalize your ears, and other skills and techniques needed in the water. This can be done online or in classroom sessions at a diving location.
The practical section of the course involves getting in the water. You will develop the many skills needed to be an open water driver. This often takes place in a swimming pool or a still body of water with an instructor nearby to practice and demonstrate new skills to you. This usually involves three to five sessions before you move to open water dives.
The last step is open water diving, which you may do before certification. This is real diving and you can demonstrate what you have learned. Having an instructor will help you build confidence as you move toward certification.
